This last week’s assignment was to “Produce an image which demonstrates the concept of ‘Contrast’. Any sort of contrast would be suitable: size, colour, shape etc.
An excellent topic for an assignment, but sometimes I find that the creative juices just don’t freely flow when these assignments are easy…

Pocket Full of Change
No excuses, it’s just that my inspiration wasn’t there this last week. I spent much of my spare time, over the entire week, daydreaming about what I should shoot, and in the end I had a couple of ideas, very technically challenging ideas to setup and execute. (way too challenging to set up Sunday evening, hours before the challenge deadline)
Then as I was sitting in the living room Sunday evening, fretting over how I was going to fulfill this week’s challenge, I saw a handful of change sitting on the coffee table. The rest is now documented in the image above.
Randall, commented on how this subject/layout might make for a good stock shoot, and I figure he just might be right…
Very little post production in this shot,…The trick was to under expose most of the shot and make sure the penny was set in the correct plane so as to reflect perfectly back into the lens.
For anyone interested, here is the challenge for this coming week (Jan 25 – 3):
The Challenge is “household appliance”: Take a photo of an appliance in your house and use the elements / principles of design to convey how it’s role is viewed/personified in your household:
Examples:
1) Our little hand blender, is rarely used, but it is “standing at attention”, in its stand on the wall, ready and waiting for when it is next called to action… (so what compositional devices can I use to convey this “readiness”???)
2) Our vacuum cleaner, which rarely seems to be taken out of its closet, seems a bit mysterious, aloof, so I might shoot it with the edge of it and its hose, peaking around the corner of the closet, with dark, mysterious lighting.
This week’s challenge should be easy in that you should be able to find plenty of subjects throughout your house, but it will take plenty of imagination to come up with a good character shot of your appliance.
Cheers,
